LINES Ballet
in collaboration with jazz legend
Pharoah Sanders
World Premiere
October 17 - 26, 2008
Novellus Theater at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
Live Music by Pharoah Sanders
Fresh from three consecutive sold-out seasons, LINES Ballet presents a World Premiere in collaboration with jazz legend Pharoah Sanders, the famed tenor saxophonist who played with John Coltrane's jazz ensemble in the 1960s. Pharoah Sanders shares Alonzo King's philosophy that art can express a truth: something underneath the surface, something deeply held in the soul. "The spirit tells me what to do and that's it," Sanders says of creating music for LINES Ballet. For King, "Dancers are musicians, and musicians are dancers - they're making music with their bodies."
The fall season will also feature a Pas De Deux created by Alonzo King for Muriel Maffre which premiered at the Venice Biennale last summer. As a guest artist with LINES Ballet, Muriel Maffre performs with company dancer Corey-Scott Gilbert. Music Composed by Wieslaw Pogorzelski and James McKee. Live improvisation by Pharoah Sanders.
In 1995 Alonzo King created a dance work to one of Poland’s most renowned composers Pawel Szymanski’s String Quartet. This fall, String Quartet will return to the stage performed by our LINES Ballet Company dancers and the LINES Ballet/Dominican University BFA Program and LINES Ballet Training Program students.
