LINES Ballet Discovery Project

CURRENT Discovery Projects >>>> MORE INFO

The LINES Ballet Discovery Project is an exciting new outreach program offered by LINES Ballet School. Our Discovery Projects are structured as a targeted way to diversify the scope of LINES Ballet School’s impact on young artists and communities. This initiative aims to strengthen and amplify the presence of arts and arts education worldwide.

Through collaboration with communities and fellow dance educators, the Discovery Project is organized as a three-to-five day intensive workshop conducted by LINES Ballet School Faculty. This workshop targets dancers ages 10-18 of an intermediate to advanced level.

Classes offered (will vary):

•ballet/pointe/men’s technique
•modern
•Repertoire workshops (including LINES Ballet Rep)

LINES Ballet School Faculty (will vary considerably by location):

•Layla Amis, School Director
•Maurya Kerr, former LINES Ballet dancer
•Arturo Fernandez, LINES Ballet Master
•Keelan Whitmore, current LINES Ballet dancer
•Shirin-Keyani Rose, former LINES Ballet dancer
•Yannis Adoniou, former LINES Ballet dancer; Artistic Director of KUNST-STOFF
•Duncan Cooper, formerly San Francisco Ballet and Dance Theater of Harlem

In March 2008 the inaugural Discovery Project launched in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This particular workshop was designed to reach a wide range of students including those who may not be able to afford travel to San Francisco to attend, or audition for, our programs. The New Mexico Discovery Project was offered to dancers at a minimal cost to ensure maximum participation from dancers regardless of economic background.

The New Mexico Discovery Project reached over 90 dancers and awarded one full scholarship for a student to attend our 2008 Summer Program.

Both the New Mexico dancers and the LINES Ballet School faculty came away from this workshop with a renewed sense of purpose and a fresh perspective on the significance of being an artist within a larger community.

The Discovery Project addresses ways to use dance to bridge gaps created by diversity of experience, perspective, culture, and socio-economic background. We aim to contribute to the overall awareness and support of dance in communities all over the country.

A parent of a Discovery Project dancer wrote:

"My daughter has always loved dance but from the intense, encouraging, and specifically passionate teachers from LINES this last weekend she has experienced an even greater joy in her dance. Her regular ballet teacher… called me today just to let me know that she had noticed a change in my daughter’s dancing in class this week – an inner strength and beauty that projected outward that seemed to rise above anything else she has ever done in class."

If you are interested being a Host community and/or Host School for the LINES Ballet Discovery Project, we would be thrilled to work with you. We look forward to creating a positive and inspirational experience that contributes to the overall awareness and support of dance in your community.
