New Classes!
Musical Theater Dance with MJ Paul
Tuesdays, 7:30 PM-9:00 PM
Class starts with an old school aerobic workout to get the blood flowing and the heart rate up into the fat burning zone which then moves into a Pilates-based abdominal workout that focuses on core stability, strength and spinal alignment. Center work and placement follow, focusing on technique-building, muscle tone, and endurance. Across the floor combinations are jazz driven working on character development and movements commonly seen in musical theatre. The combination theme will vary month to month allowing the students to explore a range of musical theatre from movies, musicals, and burlesque. A perfect class for beginners or for trained dancers who are looking to expand their repertoire of skills.
MJ Paul has been living and working in San Francisco since 2004. He currently serves as the Dance Director/Resident Choreographer for SF Boylesque, the nation’s first male burlesque company. This position has allowed him to create new works and acts that define and push boundaries of the Neo-Burlesque movement. He works with dance, comedy, musical theatre, striptease, vaudeville and circus art to produce highly acclaimed monthly cabarets. As one of the first male performers in San Francisco's Neo-Burlesque movement, he bridged the gap between classical dance and performance art showing both sides how much they could learn from each other to enhance performance value. He also regularly teaches master classes and workshops throughout Northern and Southern California and is a special guest instructor at San Francisco's Bombshell Betty Dance and Star Dance Studio . He is also longtime assistant to EMMY Award winner Suzy Miller.
Review of REVIVE 2009 -- Screendance
In January Alonzo King LINES Dance Center hosted REVIVE 2009 -- Screendance. This two-week workshop, with acclaimed filmmaker Talal Al-Muhanna and Kunst Stoff Artistic Director Yannis Adoniou, was designed to teach participants the art of integrating film-making and dance. Nineteen participants worked with San Francisco Art Institute professor, Kent Long, and SFAI students to produce eleven high-quality professional videos.
These films will be shown at the San Francisco Art Institute, 800 Chestnut Street on Wed, March 11th at 7:00 PM.
