Liezl continues her popular workshop for absolute beginners. You will build upon the lessons of her earlier workshops in a highly personalized and non-intimidating atmosphere. The basic stance, body placement, musicality, and basic terminology will continue to be a particular emphasis in the course. As a result, you will immediately see your posture and coordination improve, and you’ll gain a sense of poise and grace.
Liezl Austria performed as a dancer in the United States and Europe for more than 19 years and has been teaching for more than 7 years. She recently completed an advanced course in teaching the Vaganova (Russian-style) Syllabus. She has a passion for bringing ballet to the beginning student.

Students will also enjoy the opportunity to perform during National Dance Week, on May 1 at 2:30 PM.

Janine Trinidad’s Dance Fundamentals Workshop is an 8-week introductory course designed to give an overview of basic principles in movement and modern dance. The workshop will cover exercises to prepare the dancer for floor-work, jumps, changes in direction and beginner turns, spatial awareness, balance and flexibility, performance presence, and improvisation. A blogsite is maintained with summaries of each week’s activities to allow the dancer to enjoy more resources from home. No prior dance training is required. The workshop is intended to provide a safe forum for experimentation, inquiry, and discovery of the dancing spirit and embodied energy in every individual. Questions are encouraged, an open mind necessary, and a good time inevitable!
Janine Trinidad is a San Francisco-based movement artist who began her dance training in jazz, ballet, tap, and lyrical. She went on to study (post)modern dance at
UC Berkeley and graduated with a BA in Rhetoric and a minor in Dance & Performance Studies. Janine continued her movement practice at the American Dance Festival and Movement Research in New York, where she studied Chi Kung and improvisation with Daria Fain. She has taken her experience of different dance disciplines and her love of the art form to create a synergistic and articulate movement style all her own. Janine has performed with La Alternativa (formerly MotionLab), Jess Curtis/Gravity, Smith/Wymore Disappearing Acts, project agora, Amy Raymond, among others, as well as in her own work. She has been teaching at the Alonzo King LINES Dance Center since 2008.
Modern Dance Choreography Workshop

(A Nine-Week Workshop)
Tuesdays, March 2 through April 27, 2010
7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Students are encouraged to take a 6:00 PM class to warm-up.
$152, if paid by February 9
$180, if paid after February 9
This workshop serves to enhance the Modern dance class experience as it transitions to stage. We will explore basic movement manipulation and concepts of dynamic expression while understanding all sides of choreography: intention, quality, skill and approach.
Geared towards the student of beginning and intermediate level, each rehearsal (9 in total) will emphasize mastering new challenges within Modern dance. We will focus on musicality and phrasing, partnering, spatial awareness and ultimately negotiate the liberties of technique.
Participants will have the opportunity to perform in a showcase following the end of rehearsals (Times TBA). Gain insight to the choreographic process, bond with your fellow students and discover a new perspective of your dancing through performance.
Challenges will be designed to match the skill and comfort level of each student. Be advised to discuss concerns and/or interests with Michael Velez before the workshop begins. Whatever your level, there is a deliberate freedom your dance will identify.
Michael Velez, studying experimental theater and performance art, joined the San Diego dance scene as an apprentice for Gina Angelique’s Eveoke Dance and Sledgehammer Theater. He attended the Coronado School for the Arts while juggling performances with the San Diego Junior Theater. Michael has worked most notably and closely with two dance companies in Philadelphia- four seasons with the Koresh Dance Company and since 2003 with Charles O. Anderson's “dance theatre X” on a project-by-project basis. Both of which, he’s had the opportunity of placing choreography onto. After attending the University of the Arts, he continued to learn, inspire and dance for such widely recognized choreographers as Robert Battle, Zane Booker, Brian Sanders, Donald Byrd, and Itzik Galili (of the Netherlands Dance theater and Galili Dance). Michael's choreography and Modern Funk dance style has recently gained ample recognition in the 2008 National Ice dance Competition televised by CNN, where Kim Navarro and Brent Bommentre placed 3rd for their division, qualifying them for the 2008 Olympics. Dancing as a new company member with Robert Moses’ Kin will bring Michael's Modern Funk classes to the bay area starting 2009.
