Technique and Repertory Workshop with Rachel Berman
(10-Year Paul Taylor Principal and the ONLY Taylor Master in the Bay Area)
Geared Towards Intermediate Dancers
Every Monday, 6:30pm to 8:30pm – September 8 through October 13, 2008

Having been a principal dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company for more that a decade, Rachel Berman is in a unique position to share the secrets of the “world’s greatest living choreographer – Paul Taylor.

Ms. Berman will expose you to the full range of movement styles and genres that so characterize Paul Taylor’s work – from the beautiful and lyrical to the satirical and humorous. . .or even the depraved side of society. Gesture and everyday pedestrian movement, and inspiration from nature and the animal kingdom are hallmarks of the Taylor style.

Each session will begin with a warm-up focusing on the use of the torso and the back, spirals, grounded weight, and the fluid curves that are so prevalent in Paul Taylor’s choreography. Students will then learn excerpts of selected Paul Taylor Dance Company repertory in order to get a taste of his highly athletic vocabulary.

Rachel Berman performed principal roles with the Paul Taylor Dance Company from 1989 – 1999 and appeared in numerous Emmy Award winning television productions in the United States and internationally. She was featured in the Academy Award nominated documentary about the Taylor Company entitled DANCEMAKER. She was profiled in Vanity Fair, Dance Teacher, and was the March 1997 cover story of Dance Magazine. Ms. Berman is one of a select few personally entrusted by Paul Taylor to restage his works throughout the United States.

The Feldenkrais Method® Flexible Upper Back Workshop
Donna Bervinchak
Sunday, August 17, 2008; 12:00 - 3:00pm

During this workshop you will learn how to improve the extension and flexibility of your upper back. We will explore Feldenkrais®, Awareness Through Movement® lessons that will spark your interest and may become challenging at times. You will learn how to integrate your whole back into the movements you carry out during your life’s activities. In result, your movements will become more powerful and less effort. For example, dancers may notice these changes when doing arabesque penches; yoga enthusiasts when performing wheel poses; gymnasts when doing walkovers and handsprings; parents when picking up their children; and others when doing daily chores. By the end of the workshop, you will learn ways to increase the suppleness of your back with gentleness and with curiosity.

Donna Bervinchak, Feldenkrais® Practitioner enjoys teaching people the Feldenkrais Method® because she likes helping people reach their full potentials. To sign up for this workshop contact The S.F. Dance Center at 415-863-3040 x221.

Donna also teaches a weekly Feldenkrais®class at SFDC on Saturdays from 11:45am - 1:00pm.
