In three decades, Alonzo King LINES Ballet has grown from a fledgling ballet troupe into a highly sought after, internationally acclaimed company presented at the most prestigious international venues.
In those 30 years, Alonzo King has earned his reputation as one of the pre-eminent contemporary ballet choreographers in the world. He has created 170 original works, many of which have been performed in the repertory of the world’s great companies. King has a history of attracting a diverse range of artistic collaborators, which in the last several years alone have included BaAka from Central Africa, Shaolin Monks from China, the San Francisco Opera Adler Fellows, visionary jazz pianist Jason Moran and legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, and the Pulitzer Prize winning author Colum McCann. In 2009 the Monaco Dance Forum commissioned Alonzo King to re-imagine Scheherazade for the inauguration of the Centenary of the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, and this work was subsequently performed for San Francisco audiences in October 2010.
Scheherazade is one excellent example of King’s boundless creative capacity, and his visionary approach to art-making. The NEW WORKS FUND will allow LINES to nurture this vision and to focus on the organization’s highest priority – the quality and quantity of the artistic work of Alonzo King.
In addition to establishing a creative incubator for Alonzo King, we also seek to enrich our productions though collaboration with other world class artists. This Fund will allow LINES to confidently develop partnerships with and secure commitments from designers, artists, composers, and musicians of the highest caliber, turning a wish-list of artistic collaborating partners into a reality.
Our goal is to raise two million dollars over the next four years to support the creation and world premiere of five new works. By dedicating your contribution to the NEW WORKS FUND, you will be directly supporting the Alonzo King LINES Ballet legacy.
