Meet Our Faculty

Alonzo King, Founder and Artistic Director

Alonzo King has been called a visionary choreographer, who is altering the way we look at ballet. King calls his works “thought structures” created by the manipulation of energies that exist in matter through laws, which govern the shapes and movement directions of everything that exists. Named as a choreographer with “astonishing originality” by the New York Times, Alonzo King LINES Ballet has been guided by his unique artistic vision since 1982.

Meredith Webster, Rehearsal Director

Meredith Webster grew up in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, studying under Jean Wolfmeyer. She worked with Sonia Dawkins and Donald Byrd in Seattle, and earned a BS in Environmental Science from the UW before moving to San Francisco to work with LINES. In her nine seasons as a dancer with the company, Webster originated many central roles and received a Princess Grace Award. In 2014 she moved into the role of Ballet Master. Since then, she performed with Ledoh/Salt Farm, worked with the Maureen Whiting Company and co-created Empress Archer, an evening-length duet produced by The Cambrians of Chicago. Webster has served as a faculty member for all of the LINES programs, and as a guest teacher around the world. She has contributed as a writer to Dance Spirit and Conversations.

Roderick George – Guest Artist in Residence

Roderick George joined Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet in 2005, while also dancing with Sidra Bell Dance NY, Forces of Nature and the Kevin Wynn Collection. In 2007 Roderick moved to Switzerland and joined the Basel Ballet/ Theater Basel and guested with the Goteborg Operan DansKompani. He then joined The Forsythe Company in Frankfurt, Germany. His career has embraced the collaborations of his work and other great choreographers such as Peeping Tom, Jorma Elo, Jerome Bel, Jacopo Godani, William Forsythe, Johan Inger, Jiří Kylian, Sharon Eyal, Ohan Naharin, Benoit Swan-Pouffer, Richard Wherlock, Tino Seghal and many others. In 2016, Roderick developed a project-based company, kNoname Artist, in Berlin where he was able to explore more his choreography and sharing with beautiful artists. Alongside with the company performing, Roderick has created works for the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Ballett Basel, Canadian’s Contemporary Dance Theater, Springboard Dans Montreal, MOVE NYC, University of Utah and Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

Maurya Kerr, Faculty, Artistic Director of tinypistol

Maurya Kerr is a choreographer, educator, performer, and the artistic director of tinypistol. She was a member of Alonzo King LINES Ballet for twelve years and teaches extensively in their educational programs.

Christian Burns – Faculty, Artistic Director of burnsworks

Christian Burns has been choreographing, teaching and performing in the Bay Area for 21 years. He was a member of Lines Ballet, a guest artist with The Forsythe Company and collaborates with some of the worlds leading dance-improvisers. His pursuit for finding meaning and purpose through dance has yielded a dynamic range of interdisciplinary dance works for stage, video and visual art. He has been a member of the Lines Ballet organization for twenty years and is currently on faculty for the Training Program and an Adjunct Professor for Lines BFA at Dominican University.

Molly Rogers – Lecturer/Professor, Critical Perspectives of Dance (dance history curriculum)

Molly Rogers, MFA teaches courses in dance history and theory that change how students think about dance culture and the world. In her classes, students practice the critical thinking and communication skills that prepare them to become ambassadors for the art form. Molly designed and implemented the inaugural dance history curriculum at the Alonzo King LINES Ballet Training Program, where she serves on faculty teaching Critical Perspectives in Dance. She has worked as a lecturer in dance at UC Irvine, as well as a guest speaker at St. Mary’s College and Sonoma State University discussing the work of Alonzo King. In addition to her academic teaching, Molly’s choreography has been commissioned by Scripps College and the LINES BFA program at Dominican University, where she also serves as the dance department’s Integrative Coach. As a mentor and teacher, Molly is honored to guide students on their journey to becoming critically aware, multifaceted human beings. She was named Dominican University’s 2019 Teacher of the Year.

Debra Rose – SF GYROTONIC® Owner and Master Teacher

Debra Rose is the founder and owner of SanFrancisco GYROTONIC®, primarily created to serve the San Francisco Bay Area’s dance community in 1988.   Debra created the first syllabus and GYROTONIC® manual associated with a dance program for the LINES/Dominican University Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance program.  She has also created a unique GYROTONIC® curriculum for the Alonzo King LINES Ballet Training Program, Summer Program, San Francisco State University, and, most recently, The San Francisco High School of the Arts. As a dancer, Debra trained in New York at The School of American Ballet, after which she danced with the Oakland and San Francisco Ballets. The majority of her career was spent dancing for the San Francisco Opera Ballet and as a principle and founding member of Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet. Debra also served as a Ballet Mistress for LINES and assisted Mr. King in setting choreography on various companies that include Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem, and the Joffrey Ballet.
