Countertechnique® with Samuel Melecio-Zambrano
Countertechnique® is a contemporary dance technique class. It stretches, coordinates, and strengthens the body, making the dancer sweat, build stamina, and really move. The class starts with a recurring set of exercises, allowing dancers to investigate the Countertechnique principles in detail. The second half of the class consists of changing components, working towards luscious movement combinations and jumping at the end. As a result, dancers will use less energy, lose their fear of taking risks, and gain speed in changing directions.

Echirolles, France | November 20-21 | ON TOUR
Join Alonzo King LINES Ballet on tour in Echirolles, France performing King’s Common Ground and Handel at La Rampe.
Common Ground
With Common Ground, Alonzo King joined the famous Kronos Quartet to create an ode to the city of San Francisco. Two of the most influential cultural ambassadors of this artistic capital, King and Kronos created a visionary collaboration. The musicians explored the string quartet in a permanent conversation with the dancers. Together they invented before our eyes the vocabulary of a new classical dance… one of fluidity, technicality and grace. Experience King and Kronos Quartet’s masterpiece on tour with stunning recorded music and live dance.Handel
In 1741, Händel said of his last composition: “Whether I was in my body or outside of it when I wrote it, I do not know …”. By exploring his work in Handel, Alonzo King is in turn touched by grace: a messenger of the celestial harmony of bodies, he restores the dramatic elegance of baroque expression in an evocative choreography that resonates deeply with the nobility of the music. The pure lines of the dancers miraculously reflect Händel’s vision of a new balance between thematic richness and simplicity.Photo Credit: Alonzo King LINES Ballet | Dancers: Ashley Mayeux and James Gowan | © Chris Hardy

*** LINES Ballet Spring 2019 GalaWitness the masterful melding of old and new as King and Võ investigate characteristics shared across communities, cultures and global traditions.
As artists, Alonzo King and Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ are kindred spirits — sharing a mastery of their traditional forms as well as a drive to continually experiment.
A master of the dan tranh zither, Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ is celebrated for her deep knowledge of traditional Vietnamese instruments and musical styles. At the same time, she is one of the only artists in the world fusing these traditions with entirely new sounds and musical ideas. The tones of her instrumentation mimic the vocal vibrations of voices both past and present — breathing new life into the rich culture and legacy of Vietnamese folk music.
Likewise, King creates works that draw on a diverse set of deeply rooted cultural traditions and extend the possibilities of creative expression in dance. Channeling the understanding that ballet is part art, part science, and part primal intuition, King’s choreography showcases art’s ability to connect us to each other and the world around us.
Both King and Võ are excited to explore notions of the homegrown, identity, modes of storytelling and cultural traditions — and how they shape us as both individuals and societies.
This performance will also feature a revival of Art Songs (2016), reimagined en pointe — set to soaring musical arias recorded by mezzo-soprano, Maya Lahyani.
