Join our LINES Ballet company dancers in Northridge, CA performing at The Soraya. Grounded on more than 40 years of thought-provoking dance, master choreographer Alonzo King’s unique artistic vision honors and advances the classical form—the linear, mathematical, and geometrical principles deeply rooted in the East-West continuum.
This winter, our company honors legendary spiritual leader, composer, pianist, and harpist Alice Coltrane and one of the most vital and deft trumpeters of his generation, Ambrose Akinmusire, through Alonzo King’s choreography.
Ode to Alice Coltrane
King has been captivated by jazz legend Alice Coltrane for much of his life, and his 2024 creation to her music is not his first. For this recent piece, he chose Coltrane’s 1971 album, Journey in Satchidananda. King was drawn to Coltrane for the marrying of East and West in her music, teachings, and life, something that resonates with King in his own work.
The Beauty of Dissolving Portraits
Premiering last spring, The Beauty of Dissolving Portraits features choreographer Alonzo King’s first-ever collaboration with American jazz trumpeter/composer Ambrose Akinmusire—a spiritual seeker in the grand tradition of musical aspirationalists. Akinmusire’s music overflows with both beauty and rigor, profound personal feeling, and fiery virtuoso playing. What one hears throughout his work is an artist plumbing the depths of himself and the world around him.
