Maurice Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose):

The performance will feature Alonzo King’s recent collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony. Here our dancers delve into the enchanting world of Ravel’s 1912 suite Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose), infusing the music with a new interpretation. “I’m not trying to recreate Mother Goose fairy tales,” says King. “My intention is to unearth the deeper allegorical meanings beneath the fairy tales and illustrate those with dance.”

Alonzo King’s acclaimed collaboration with lauded MacArthur Fellow composer Jason Moran takes on new life in a transformative re-envisioning by King, the LINES Ballet dancers, and extraordinary light installation artist Jim Campbell. This work was originally commissioned by San Francisco Ballet for the 2018 Unbound Festival and set on the National Ballet of Canada four years later, but the alchemy between King and the company dancers infuses it with new resonance. “When a ballet is done by other dancers, it still holds up as beautiful,” King says. “But when you have artists who are able to read your every gesture and absorb your consciousness, it is a completely different message.” Enjoy the striking Pas de Deux from this work at this performance.
