Spring Season 2024 | April 5–14

This season LINES Ballet presents a world premiere, a reimagining of The Collective Agreement, and 2013’s Concerto for Two Violins. Originally commissioned by San Francisco Ballet in 2018, The Collective Agreement, Alonzo King’s acclaimed collaboration with jazz pianist Jason Moran, takes on new life in a transformative re-envisioning by King, the LINES Ballet dancers, and light installation artist Jim Campbell.

Their artistic alchemy will infuse the ballet with new resonance. “We are, as a community, trying to reach wholeness,” King says. “How do we come together?” The intimate duets and ensembles echo the rising tempi of composer Moran’s original score, his first for a symphony orchestra and his eighth for LINES Ballet. The music was recorded live for this performance by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, with Moran on piano.

In addition, King and the company will present a world premiere along with a reprise of 2013’s Concerto for Two Violins, which turns the layers of fugue and counterpoint of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 1730 work into metaphors of human relationships.
LINES Ballet is grateful to our Season Presenting Sponsor, BMO.

Currently, Moran teaches at the New England Conservatory.

Moran has recorded and performed with masters of the form including Charles Lloyd, Bill Frisell, and the late Sam Rivers, and his work with his trio The Bandwagon (with drummer Nasheet Waits and bassist Tarus Mateen), which resulted in a profound discography for Blue Note Records. He also has collaborated with such major figures as Adrian Piper, Joan Jonas, Glenn Ligon, Stan Douglas, Adam Pendleton, Lorna Simpson, and Kara Walker; commissioning institutions of Moran’s work include the Walker Art Center, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Dia Art Foundation, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Harlem Stage, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
