ADULT CHOREOGRAPHY INTENSIVE

JUNE 1–4, 2023

Stretch your body and your mind as you learn and perform three short pieces in our Adult Choreography Intensive 2023! At the end of the weekend, you will be a stronger and more versatile dancer.

During the intensive, you’ll work with three different choreographers of three separate genres. ArVejon Jones will guide you on a journey through jazz. He has a fierce passion for the style and an encyclopedic knowledge. Katie Roy will share her process for creating contemporary movement, understanding your organic impulse, and tapping into your innate creativity. And Victor Talledos will open your world to contemporary ballet, demonstrating how traditional movement can be broadened to make fresh, new artistic statements.

Our Adult Choreography Intensive 2023 culminates in an in-person showing in one of our studios, a great opportunity to perform for friends, family, and peers.

KINESIOLOGY AND REPERTORY WORKSHOP WITH NOL SIMONSE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DEVON CHEN

JANUARY 16 – FEBRUARY 20

In this workshop, Devon Chen PT, DPT, OCS, and Nol Simonse will lead dancers in a fun, engaging process designed to deepen our awareness of our bodies and artistic capabilities.

Nol will teach material from his piece “clown cage,” created and performed with Miche Wong in a residency at Deborah Slater’s Studio 210. This material is challenging, and designed to increase memory, stamina, and performative qualities. The workshop is open to dancers at any level, but the phrases being taught are geared towards intermediate dancers.

Devon will guide dancers in an exploration of movement to gain a better understanding of the anatomy and bio-mechanics of dance. Each class will focus on a different topic that will enable dancers to break down barriers that have been holding them back.

Approach your body and dancing from different points of view—grow and stretch your knowledge and capabilities with these two wonderful teachers!

BEGINNING MODERN WITH ALEX TISCARENO

EVERY FRIDAY | 6 - 7:30PM PDT

This beginning modern class is designed for those with little to no experience with modern dance techniques. We will dive deeper into the vocabulary of modern dance classes, using Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff fundamentals as a guiding point to explore release techniques through an embodied practice. Dancers will explore exercises that utilize weight-shifts, floor-work, rhythm, transitions, level changes, and direction changes, with a focus on personal strength and safety for the individual dancer.

COUNTERTECHNIQUE® WITH SAMUEL MELECIO-ZAMBRANO

EVERY SUNDAY | 2 - 3:45pm

Countertechnique® is a contemporary dance technique class. It stretches, coordinates, and strengthens the body, making the dancer sweat, build stamina, and really move. The class starts with a recurring set of exercises, allowing dancers to investigate the Countertechnique principles in detail. The second half of the class consists of changing components, working towards luscious movement combinations and jumping at the end. As a result, dancers will use less energy, lose their fear of taking risks, and gain speed in changing directions.

ON TOUR: ECHIROLLES, FRANCE | Alonzo King LINES Ballet

NOVEMBER 20-21

Join Alonzo King LINES Ballet on tour in Echirolles, France performing King’s Common Ground and Handel at La Rampe.

Common Ground
With Common Ground, Alonzo King joined the famous Kronos Quartet to create an ode to the city of San Francisco. Two of the most influential cultural ambassadors of this artistic capital, King and Kronos created a visionary collaboration. The musicians explored the string quartet in a permanent conversation with the dancers. Together they invented before our eyes the vocabulary of a new classical dance… one of fluidity, technicality and grace. Experience King and Kronos Quartet’s masterpiece on tour with stunning recorded music and live dance.

Handel
In 1741, Händel said of his last composition: “Whether I was in my body or outside of it when I wrote it, I do not know …”. By exploring his work in Handel, Alonzo King is in turn touched by grace: a messenger of the celestial harmony of bodies, he restores the dramatic elegance of baroque expression in an evocative choreography that resonates deeply with the nobility of the music. The pure lines of the dancers miraculously reflect Händel’s vision of a new balance between thematic richness and simplicity.

*** LINES Ballet Spring 2019 Gala

Witness the masterful melding of old and new as King and Võ investigate characteristics shared across communities, cultures and global traditions.

As artists, Alonzo King and Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ are kindred spirits — sharing a mastery of their traditional forms as well as a drive to continually experiment.

A master of the dan tranh zither, Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ is celebrated for her deep knowledge of traditional Vietnamese instruments and musical styles. At the same time, she is one of the only artists in the world fusing these traditions with entirely new sounds and musical ideas. The tones of her instrumentation mimic the vocal vibrations of voices both past and present — breathing new life into the rich culture and legacy of Vietnamese folk music.

Likewise, King creates works that draw on a diverse set of deeply rooted cultural traditions and extend the possibilities of creative expression in dance. Channeling the understanding that ballet is part art, part science, and part primal intuition, King’s choreography showcases art’s ability to connect us to each other and the world around us.

Both King and Võ are excited to explore notions of the homegrown, identity, modes of storytelling and cultural traditions — and how they shape us as both individuals and societies.

This performance will also feature a revival of Art Songs (2016), reimagined en pointe — set to soaring musical arias recorded by mezzo-soprano, Maya Lahyani.
